Where does BetterShopper get the prices from?
The extension is determining what you are looking at, then it's querying the other stores in order to grab the prices. This is done in realtime, "under the hood", so to speak. There's no price or product database on this server. I have neither the capacity nor the energy nor the mental instability to attempt something like that. :) Besides, it'd be rather pointless -- after all, we're all interested in the current prices, aren't we?
Where does the extension get the currency exchange rates from?
Everytime you fire up your Firefox, it's grabbing the rates from this very server. This is only done once per day, and it's done in a way that's not slowing down your browser start.
How do I uninstall BetterShopper?
See your "Tools" menu, pick "Extensions", find BetterSearch in the window that opened, right-click this entry and pick "Uninstall". Using this menu entry will allow you to rid your Firefox from my extension and all related config data. :)
What's with the Amazon IDs and affiliate IDs in the comparison box links? What does it cost me?
I am an Amazon Associate and affiliate of some of these stores. Amazon Associates drive internet traffic to Amazon through specially formatted links and earn a small percentage of a sale on all qualifying revenue made through their links. Actually, this principle applies to most affiliate programs.
When you use BetterShopper, find a better price via the price comparison box and click the link to get to the store, you support me and the further development of the extension if you actually purchase a product.
You won't pay more than you would if you had found the product in question yourself, without BetterShopper's help, that's guaranteed.
So, in short, yes, I make a few bucks if you buy stuff after using the links in the price comparison box. :)
PLEASE NOTE: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE OR SPREAD THIS EXTENSION IF YOU RIP OUT OR REPLACE MY AFFILIATE IDS.
AMAZON LINKS ARE ONLY TAGGED INSIDE THE PRICE COMPARISON BOX. The extension is NOT tinkering with any links outside of the price comparison box.
IF YOU CAN'T LIVE WITH THE AFFILIATE CODE IN THESE FEW ADDED LINKS, THEN PLEASE UNINSTALL THIS EXTENSION RIGHT NOW. Thank you.
Why a Creative Commons license? Why Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 Germany?
When I first build BetterSearch, it took mere hours after releasing it into the wild before one guy took it, ripped out my affiliate ID and re-posted it. Needless to say, that made me a tad mad. Usually I'm an advocate of Open Source, but that was just ridiculous. So I've talked with said person, he took the modified version down and put my original version back up. We've come to terms since then, but it made me think.
When I started working on BetterShopper, I knew right from the start that I don't want to see modified versions of it. I've put a lot of energy into it, and I've put almost as much time into reading through all the GPL-compatible and -incompatible licenses I could find. Interestingly enough, none was a written version of what I had in mind. So, being a big fan of the CC licenses for various reasons, I've decided to go with a Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 Germany. It's a simple, easy to understand license, and it's exactly what I have in mind. If you like it, use it and spread it, take a look at the source code, laugh your ass off while looking at it, but don't screw around with it and release modified versions. It's as easy as that. The software is free, free as in "free beer". Hmmm... beer.
